The Studio
McKenzie & Keim is an American lighting design studio. We craft high quality light fixtures suitable for residential and commercial interiors. Our products merge LED technology with classic materials like brass, glass, and solid wood to create timeless, efficient luminaries. Each light features minimal lines and elegant transitions between components, all clad in a variety of standard and custom finishes.
The Story
Taylor McKenzie-Veal and Brendan Keim started their eponymous studio to bring their designs to life and into people’s homes. While attending graduate school at the Rhode Island School of Design, their woodworking benches were next to each other. In that creative space, they found common ground in their design philosophies. They quickly became friends. After years of pursuing their own careers, they joined forces, fusing their knowledge of materials, production, technology and design into one Studio. McKenzie & Keim was born in 2016, and operates today from their location in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Taylor McKenzie-Veal
Hailing from the Midwest, Taylor grew up camping around the great lakes, making messes with clay, and doodling things he spotted around Indianapolis. He attended University of Michigan for his bachelor's degree, focusing his studies in industrial design. He has since received an MFA in Furniture Design from the Rhode Island School of Design and founded Studio McKenzie-Veal, a product design practice. In the years since graduate school he has taught object design at Brown University, RISD, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Brendan Keim
Born and raised on the shoreline of Connecticut, Brendan spent his youth wandering beaches and forests, consuming science fiction, and taking things apart. He attended Pratt Institute to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design. After graduating in 2005, Brendan spent the next five years working with various designers and firms throughout the five boroughs, including Patrick Townsend, Clodagh, and Nick Dine. In 2012, Brendan received his Master's of Fine Arts in Furniture Design at Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI. In the years since graduate school Brendan has worked for Lindsey Adelman, West Elm, and of course McKenzie & Keim.
